Alexander Kristoff had to abandon the Tour de Langkawi after a crash. It was the last race of the burly Norwegian's career, bringing his career to a very abrupt end.
During the penultimate stage, with about 90 kilometers to go, Kristoff and his teammate Erlend Blikra went down simultaneously. It was an isolated incident with very serious consequences. Kristoff's entire forearm was bleeding, and he seemed concerned about his elbow and wrist. He was unable to continue racing.
Earlier this week, the 38-year-old Norwegian spoke quite calmly about the impending end while in Langkawi. "It's a bit special, but also not really. I prepared the same way I would for any other race. I haven't thought too much about the end of my career yet, but after the race, it will definitely feel strange that it's over," he told our microphone.
For the experienced Kristoff, stopping felt logical. "I have many kids at home who also want attention from their father. Besides that, I notice that cycling is getting faster and more difficult all the time. For me, that now means fewer good results; I can't compete like I used to," said the burly sprinter.
In his final race, Kristoff aimed for two stage wins to reach 100 professional victories but ended up with just one second place after a photo finish against Matteo Malucelli.
