Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado's cyclocross return in Flamanville, France, was very promising, but the Fenix Deceuninck rider had to abandon early Sunday in her second race of the season. During the World Cup round in Terralba — on the Italian island of Sardinia — she pulled the brakes already in the second lap.
For Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado, her cyclocross comeback had initially been a success. The leader of Fenix-Deceuninck had been dealing with a knee injury during the early cross months and took no risks with her recovery.
The first World Cup race in Tábor had come too soon, but last week in Flamanville she was back in the mix. Alvarado capped that comeback with an impressive podium finish.
So, there were quite a few eyes on the Dutch rider with Dominican roots in Terralba again, but Alvarado didn’t get the best start. She had to chase early on but soon fought her way forward. After more than a lap, she was riding in seventh position and hunting the leaders.
However, at the feed zone, Alvarado suddenly disappeared without a trace. We did see the 27-year-old cross rider leave the course. It is still unclear why Alvarado withdrew from the race, but according to Sporza, it’s not due to recurring knee problems. She is said to be experiencing some throat issues.
