Notable transfer news from Belgium: Edward Planckaert will not be making the move to Soudal Quick-Step in 2026 after all. This was reported by HLN and has also been confirmed to WielerFlits. The transfer of the 30-year-old all-rounder had already been officially announced on August 4th in a press release from the Wolfpack, but Planckaert is now backing out.
"I did plan to move to Soudal Quick-Step. As the season progressed and during the Vuelta, I felt where my place is and where I feel best," Planckaert told HLN. "I acted too impulsively and entered into talks with Jurgen (Foré, CEO of Soudal Quick-Step, ed.). We have mutually agreed on this in a professional manner, and this is the outcome."
Planckaert had indeed signed a contract with Soudal Quick-Step, but discussions are now underway to dissolve it. Representatives from Foré’s team have indicated that they are willing to release Planckaert, as they prefer working with a rider who is fully committed to them. According to HLN, Laurenz Rex could potentially fill that role, but the final outcome is still pending the merger between Lotto and Intermarché-Wanty and whether Rex will become available.
Alpecin-Deceuninck, however, secures an important acquisition with Planckaert. Several mid-level riders, such as Gianni Vermeersch and Quinten Hermans, will leave the team this winter after years of service. Planckaert is not only crucial in the classic races core but also serves as a lead-out for Jasper Philipsen.
