Mads Pedersen speaks out after crash and injury blow
He started his cycling season with big ambitions, but after a crash in the Tour of Valencia, it is uncertain whether Mads Pedersen can still defend his chances in his favorite spring classics. However, the Dane’s fighting spirit will not be lacking.
The leader of Lidl-Trek has already spoken out on Instagram and is ready to wage his race against the clock. “This is not the best start to the year,” he wrote with understatement. “But I’ll come back,” he assured.
Pedersen suffered another blow yesterday. The world champion from Harrogate began his season on Wednesday afternoon in the Tour of Valencia but crashed in the first stage. The classics specialist and sprinter had to abandon immediately after the crash and was taken to the hospital.
Just before 10 p.m. Wednesday evening, Lidl-Trek released an update on their leader. The verdict was harsh: Pedersen fractured his left wrist and right collarbone in the crash. This puts the classic spring season at risk for the Dane.

“The first priority for Lidl-Trek is to ensure Mads receives the best possible care. The primary focus is on achieving the most successful recovery possible to minimize the impact on his season goals,” the team said Wednesday evening. “In due course, we will communicate his return to racing. If updates are necessary, we will share them.” How long the Dane will be sidelined remains unclear at this stage.
