MPCC: fewer doping cases in cycling again, but concerns remain

The number of doping cases in professional cycling has slightly decreased again in 2025. This is reported by the MPCC, the association advocating for credible cycling. With twenty confirmed cases, this trend confirms a decline since 2022, when 29 cases were made public.

In 2025, cycling ranked only tenth on the list of doping and sports fraud cases, far behind athletics, weightlifting, and tennis. According to the so-called Credibility Figures, cycling therefore no longer belongs to the most affected sports. However, the MPCC warns against complacency. For example, the organization sees that teams have pushed the 'grey zone' in recent years with practices such as the use of painkillers and the controversial carbon monoxide method.

The MPCC also points out that for the first time in two years, a WorldTour rider was suspended following irregularities in his biological passport. The organization is referring to Oier Lazkano, who rode last year for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. The fluctuations in his blood passport actually date from the 2022 to 2024 period, when the Spaniard rode for Movistar.

Continental level
Furthermore, extra 'vigilance' remains necessary at the Continental circuit. As can be seen in the last image of the series below, nearly half of all doping cases in 2025 were detected at this third professional level.
