Richard Carapaz aims for sporting revenge in Giro d'Italia

Jonas Vingegaard will likely have to face a former La Corsa Rosa winner in his first Giro d'Italia. According to Spanish-speaking media, Richard Carapaz is also preparing for the Tour of Italy. The 2019 winner will undoubtedly be aiming for sporting revenge.

The team leader of EF Education-EasyPost was also present last year and stayed in contention for the overall win until the very last moment. In the decisive mountain stage over the Colle delle Finestre to Sestriere, Carapaz and then-pink jersey holder Isaac Del Toro were outwitted after a strange tactical show by the eventual winner Simon Yates, who managed to solo away for a double victory.

In other words, Carapaz still has unfinished business with the Giro d'Italia. The Tokyo Olympic champion is set to appear again in the first Grand Tour of the season, as reported by the Colombian branch of AS.

The 32-year-old rider is expected to kick off his season later this month on the Spanish island of Mallorca with several races in the Challenge Mallorca series. This will be followed by a Portuguese interlude with the Figueira Champions Classic and the Volta ao Algarve, and two Italian races ahead of the Giro, the Trofeo Laigueglia and Tirreno-Adriatico.

Strong field of participants
Carapaz will have to compete in the upcoming Giro d'Italia against top favorite Jonas Vingegaard, while João Almeida, Adam Yates, Enric Mas, Mikel Landa, Giulio Pellizzari, Jai Hindley (also a former winner), Felix Gall, Derek Gee-West, Santiago Buitrago, Michael Storer, and Lennert Van Eetvelt have all already confirmed their participation.
