Tom Pidcock aims for Tour podium and believes Tadej Pogacar can be beaten
Road racing, cyclocross, mountain biking... Tom Pidcock is known as a versatile athlete, but there was long-standing doubt about his future as a stage racer. However, in the recent Vuelta a España, the Brit showed that he is cut from the right GC contender cloth. This made Pidcock realize that there is a lot of potential for him in the Tour de France as well.
In an interview with the Spanish sports newspaper Marca, Pidcock openly shares his ambitions for the upcoming Tour de France. The 26-year-old leader of Pinarello-Q36.5 believes the time is right to aim for a podium spot.
"I think it's much more achievable now, after what I showed last year. But a podium in the Tour is still something very different. I understand what it takes... Well, maybe I don’t fully understand because I’ve never done it before. But it’s a challenge we’re working towards. I’m not worried about my rivals, I just need to be at my absolute best when the race starts."
"Everyone is beatable"
In the Tour, Pidcock will have to face a certain Tadej Pogacar. The Slovenian has been extremely dominant and almost unbeatable in stage racing over the last two seasons, but Pidcock is definitely not afraid of the four-time Tour winner. "Is he beatable? Yes," he states unequivocally. "What’s the strategy? There is no strategy. Everyone is beatable, that’s all I know."
"I won’t go into it any further because it’s a question I’m always asked. I’m not worried about it, I just have to focus on myself. But if you ask me if he’s beatable, my answer is yes. Everyone is beatable."
