Tom Pidcock has spoken out about the UCI's new plans to improve safety in the peloton by, among other things, imposing speed limits via technical regulations. The Brit believes that the international cycling union is focusing on minor details. "We need to talk about the important things", Pidcock said in an interview with Marca.
Starting January 2026, the UCI wants to introduce a series of new rules, including a maximum gear ratio of 54x11 and restrictions on handlebar widths. Pidcock cannot agree with these measures. "Limiting gear ratios only creates more danger", Pidcock said. "If we all ride at the same top speed, we end up closer together. And on descents, that means we take up more of the road."
Pidcock also finds the debate about handlebar width irrelevant. "The discussion about handlebar width seems like a smokescreen to me", said the 25-year-old Brit. "I told my brother that if we keep going like this, they'll also need to limit carbohydrates for everyone and put us in ketosis (a metabolic state you enter when you consume very few carbs, ed.). Only then will races slow down. We are cyclists… People should focus on other issues."
