Dorian Godon has won the 106th edition of the Coppa Bernocchi. The French champion was invisible for most of the race but got the chance to sprint for victory after a regrouping in the finale. Godon did not hesitate: in Legnano, he was just faster than Tobias Lund Andresen, with Giovanni Lonardi crossing the line third.
Now that the European Championships in Ardèche have taken place, we conclude the international road championships in 2025, but this does not mean the cycling season is over. There are still several Italian autumn classics to come this week. In the lead-up to the biggest of all, the Giro di Lombardia, it was time on Monday for the 106th edition of the Coppa Bernocchi.
This very old one-day race, together with the Coppa Agostoni (5/10) and Tre Valli Varesine (7/10), forms part of the Trittico Regione Lombardia. The riders who showed up – including Matthew Brennan, Jay Vine, Dorian Godon, Ethan Hayter, Egan Bernal, and Matteo Trentin – faced a 191.6-kilometer race over hilly roads in and around Legnano.

Strong breakaway with Vermeersch and Hayter
The day's break came relatively early and consisted of only five riders, but these were no small names. Ethan Hayter decided not to wait for the finale, as the Brit from Soudal Quick-Step attacked alongside Gianni Vermeersch (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Xabier Mikel Azparren (Q36.5 Pro Cycling), Joel Suter (Tudor Pro Cycling), and Samuel Quaranta (son of former top sprinter Ivan Quaranta).

The peloton let them go but didn’t allow this strong breakaway – featuring some rugged rouleurs – too much leeway. Visma | Lease a Bike, the team of top favorite Brennan, kept the gap under two minutes. This set the stage for a regrouping in the hilly section, but a new break soon formed. This time, Sepp Kuss, Michael Matthews, Albert Withen Philipsen, Jordan Labrosse, and Benjamin Thomas shook up the race.
Race splits apart in the hills
These five riders built a maximum advantage of around half a minute, so it was all hands on deck in the now significantly reduced peloton. On the flanks of the penultimate climb to Caramamma (1.6 km at 6.8%), many riders counter-attacked, but initially only two managed to bridge: Quinten Hermans and top favorite Brennan.
The situation suddenly looked very promising for Visma | Lease a Bike. The Dutch team started the last 35 kilometers with a numerical advantage (considering the presence of Kuss and Brennan in the front group), but Vincenzo Albanese, Mikkel Honoré, Andrea Bagioli, Bjorn Koerdt, and Jay Vine also joined from behind. Thus, twelve leaders approached the final climb of Caramamma.
Still a regrouping
On this ascent, Bagioli and Vine caused another selection. After these accelerations, only seven riders remained, but attacks were certainly not over yet. In the background, several teams made desperate attempts to bring it all back together for a (possible) sprint finish, but the leaders held firm for a long time. Nonetheless, they could not prevent a regrouping in the final kilometers.
Then we saw a late attack from American champion Quinn Simmons, but a sprint was inevitable. In this sprint, Dorian Godon took the win, although the gap to Tobias Lund Andresen (Picnic PostNL) was very narrow. The rider from Decathlon AG2R was just a fraction faster than his Danish rival and secured his fifth win of the season. Andresen and Giovanni Lonardi joined Godon on the podium.
