About CyclingFlash
From a Dutch Attic to the World's Peloton
CyclingFlash is the international cycling platform by Wielerflits, the leading cycling media organization in the Netherlands and Belgium. What started in the summer of 2008 on an attic room in Twente has grown into one of Europe's most prominent cycling media brands, reaching more than ten million unique visitors annually.
In June 2008, fifteen-year-old Leon Strötker broke his collarbone during a race. Out of boredom during his recovery -and because nothing like it existed yet -he built a website for cycling news. The first post appeared on July 4, 2008 and covered Mark Cavendish at the Tour de France. Weeks later, Martin van den Bosch acquired the site and gave the modest platform a growing foundation.
Growing Into a Newsroom
An active forum, detailed race previews and reader engagement proved the right formula. While friends initially filled the site with articles and columns, the search for journalistic talent began. Maxim Horssels (2009) and Youri IJnsen (2010) joined early on, both still students at the time. In 2014, Wielerflits became a company. Editors received compensation and the platform started producing original reporting with increasing frequency. Nick Doup joined the editorial team in 2015. As the first online cycling platform, Wielerflits pioneered video interviews and launched a podcast long before podcasting became mainstream.
Expansion and Innovation
In late 2016, WielerFlits Live launched as the first online cycling talk show. By 2017 it aired weekly from a basement near Amsterdam's Prins Hendrikkade. The following year, media company Southfields acquired a stake, giving the team its first office along the IJ waterfront in Amsterdam. WielerFlits Live moved to Hilversum's Media Park, hosting prominent names from the cycling world including Michael Boogerd, Aart Vierhouten and Adrie van der Poel.
At the end of 2018, WielerFlits.be launched to better serve the Belgian audience. Experienced newspaper journalist Nico Dick joined the team, bringing a massive boost to cyclocross coverage and the platform's standing in Belgium.
The Platform Today
In 2020, Raymond Kerckhoffs -one of the world's most renowned cycling journalists, formerly of De Telegraaf -became co-owner. In early 2021, the platform launched RIDE Magazine, a high-end print cycling publication appearing four times a year. Wielerflits moved to the MediArena in Amsterdam.
In 2024, CyclingFlash was launched as a comprehensive cycling data platform: race results, rider profiles, team overviews, calendars and rankings -built to enrich the news coverage with deep, structured cycling data drawn from Wielerflits' nearly two decades of expertise. In the autumn of 2025, English-language news was added, making CyclingFlash the full international arm of the Wielerflits family.
