Belgian Cycling also files complaint against climate activist
The peloton in the Tour of Bruges was shaken yesterday by a crash caused by the action of a climate activist. Golazo announced the same evening that they would be filing a complaint, and the organizer is now supported by Belgian Cycling.
The crash occurred on the Brieversweg, the only cobbled section on the Tour of Bruges course. A climate activist sat down on this section, causing chaos. About ten riders fell at the back of the peloton, including Tim Marsman, Florian Sénéchal, and Juan Sebastian Molano. The climate activist in question turned out to be Wouter Mouton, who is known in Flanders for his climate protests.
Organizer Golazo already issued a statement yesterday, and Belgian Cycling is now taking a stand as well. "It is a reckless act that Belgian Cycling strongly condemns," the press release states. "As an affected party, Belgian Cycling has decided to file an official complaint."
"Must never come at the expense of safety"
"Although the federation does not condemn the right to free speech or the message itself, the safety of the peloton and the people following the caravan must never be jeopardized by such actions. Belgian Cycling values social issues and these can receive the necessary attention, but never at the expense of safety."
"Numerous initiatives that prioritize the safety of riders and followers are carefully developed by race organizers and federations. That safety is a priority and must never be compromised by reckless actions."
