Chris Froome was hit by a car during a training session in southern France on Wednesday. This was reported by L'Équipe. According to the French newspaper, the four-time Tour winner was subsequently airlifted to the hospital by helicopter.
Froome was seriously injured in the accident but remained conscious and was able to communicate with those around him, according to L'Équipe. The crash occurred near Toulon, not far from Monaco, where the 40-year-old Brit resides. It is expected that Froome will not race again this year.
2026?
The question remains whether we will see Froome in the pro peloton at all again. His contract with Israel-Premier Tech runs until the end of 2025, and he had previously indicated that he would retire after this year. However, in the Never Strays Far podcast with ITV Sport commentator Ned Boulting, Froome said earlier this year that this is not yet certain. "I haven’t 100% decided to stop at the end of this year," he said at the time. "There’s a good chance I will, but I’m leaving the door open. I’ll see how the year goes and how I feel towards the end."
This is not the first serious crash Froome has suffered. In 2019, he had a heavy fall while reconnoitering the time trial at the Critérium du Dauphiné. He would never regain his previous level afterward. He made his comeback early in 2020 but was never able to reach his old form. This year, he has raced for 31 days. His best result was 47th place in a mountain stage at the Sibiu Cycling Tour.
