It had been in the air for some time, but now it’s official: Remco Evenepoel will leave Soudal Quick-Step after this season to join Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. Soudal Quick-Step announced the Belgian’s departure via social media.
Evenepoel and Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe have been linked for years, but the deal never became concrete. However, in early July, progress became apparent when serious talks between Soudal Quick-Step and Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe surfaced. Later, multiple sources told WielerFlits / CyclingFlash that Evenepoel’s transfer would be officially announced by the German team in the first week of August. Now that moment has finally arrived.
Evenepoel turned pro with Deceuninck Quick-Step in 2019, the predecessor of Soudal Quick-Step. It was with this team that the Aerokogel from Schepdaal rose to become an absolute world-class rider. He was still under contract until the end of 2026, but the now 25-year-old rider, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, and Soudal Quick-Step have apparently reached an agreement. Soudal Quick-Step’s permission was required under UCI regulations to terminate the current contract and allow the transfer to proceed.
At Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, Evenepoel will not be the only major GC contender. Primož Roglič still has a contract with the German outfit, as does Florian Lipowitz, who finished third in the recent Tour de France. Sources previously told WielerFlits that Lipowitz is under contract until at least the end of 2026. Evenepoel will also join two fellow countrymen at Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe: Jordi Meeus and Maxim Van Gils.
