A major setback for Davide Formolo ahead of the new cycling season. The experienced Italian is sidelined for an extended period due to a very unusual incident. A cup of tea turned out to be the culprit.
The climber—who currently rides for Movistar—dropped a cup of tea this week, and it had very serious consequences. "Life is strange. There's nothing you can do about it," Formolo begins his post on Instagram.
"As a rider, you cover around 30,000 kilometers per year on roads where trucks pass you just two centimeters from your handlebars. You often race downhill on wet roads, like Valentino Rossi on the Mugello circuit."
Six weeks out of action
But apparently, bad luck lurks in much smaller corners for Formolo. "And then you spill a cup of tea on your foot, resulting in a cut... At first, it didn’t seem like much, but I soon realized I couldn’t lift my big toe anymore. Right now, I can’t do anything and have to rest for six weeks."
After this forced break, Formolo will resume training—if his rehabilitation goes well. In any case, it’s a huge disappointment for the Italian, as riders typically lay down a crucial base for the new cycling year during this period. Formolo still has a contract with his current team Movistar until the end of 2026.
