Eddy Merckx celebrated his eightieth birthday earlier this year, but the Belgian cycling legend has been struggling with his health for some time. The 'Cannibal' is now fortunately on the mend and hopes to be able to ride again in the future.
In a joint interview with his friend, contemporary, and singer Salvatore Adamo (82) in the Walloon newspaper La Dernière Heure, Merckx spoke about his fragile health. The former champion has been dealing with hip problems for a while. It all started with a fall during a bike ride in December 2024. He broke his hip in the crash and had to undergo surgery.
It wasn’t just one operation. Merckx ultimately underwent several surgeries in a short period. A few months ago it became clear that the prosthesis was not properly attached to the bone, causing it to loosen. In September, he successfully had surgery on his hip: the five-time Tour winner received a permanent hip prosthesis.
Meanwhile, Merckx is recovering well. "I walk on a treadmill and ride a stationary bike. I hope to be able to ride outside again someday," said the Belgian—who visits the physiotherapist four times a week for necessary exercises—optimistically. "Each surgery required full anesthesia. That was very hard on him, but we hope the worst is behind us now," emphasized his daughter Sabrina.
"I'm going through difficult times right now," Merckx describes. "But I am very happy to see my children and grandchildren grow up. What I hope for the future? That I'll be fully healthy again soon and can keep enjoying the people around me."
