Fernando Gaviria will ride for Caja Rural-RGA in 2026. The Colombian sprinter has signed a one-year contract with the Spanish ProTeam. He is transferring from Movistar, where he was not retained after a few lean years.
"What motivated me the most to join Caja Rural-Seguros RGA was the conversation I had with them. I felt great enthusiasm about my arrival," Gaviria said in a statement on the Caja Rural-RGA website. "Looking ahead to next year, my goal is to work hard, support the team in every possible way, and try to achieve victories. Participating in a Grand Tour would be special, and in the case of the Vuelta a España, it would be truly amazing to compete for a hat trick of Grand Tour stage wins."
The 31-year-old Gaviria has been riding for Movistar since 2023, but his results have been underwhelming in recent seasons. In his first year with the team, he found success at the Vuelta a San Juan and the Tour of Romandie, but in 2024 he managed only one sprint victory at the Tour Colombia. This year, the former top sprinter only reached a handful of podium finishes.
Once a top sprinter
In his early professional years, Gaviria was among the world’s sprinting elite. Riding for Quick Step and UAE Emirates, he won five stages in the Giro d’Italia (including the points classification), two stages in the Tour de France, and Paris-Tours. His palmares includes 52 professional victories.
Reportedly, Gaviria did have talks about his future with the management of Movistar and wanted to stay, but the telecom team is looking for a ‘younger sprinter for the future’ and therefore decided to part ways with the former top sprinter.
