Festival tent saved from collapse: Snow causes momentary worries in Zonhoven

TV viewers will undoubtedly enjoy it, but for the organization of the Zonhoven World Cup, the snowfall was a moment when all hands were on deck. "It was anything but a quiet morning," says project manager Brecht Toelen from Flanders Classics in an interview with Het Nieuwsblad.

The snowfall caused significant logistical challenges. "On Friday, when the first snow fell, everything was in place. That was fortunate. On Saturday morning, we cleared the snow for the official training sessions. The municipality of Zonhoven used a street sweeper for that. However, the bridges were kept closed and covered with plastic," Toelen explains.

"This morning, we had to start all over again due to a new layer of snow. The start and finish lanes as well as the riders' parking were immediately cleared. Salt was spread on the temporary bridges. I think we went through half a pallet of salt."

Risk of Collapse
Toelen is grateful for the efforts of the municipality of Zonhoven. "Thanks to them, all the access roads used for the shuttle routes were snow-free by 9 a.m. Moreover, they helped save the public tent on Saturday. Due to snow on the roof, there was a risk of collapse. By temporarily disconnecting the gutter, we were able to let the flakes slide off, and the danger was averted."

"We also ultimately decided to bring in extra heating for that tent. It was anything but a quiet morning, but we are ready to welcome everyone," he adds.
