From sandpit to snowpit: course in Zonhoven covered with heavy snowpack
The Zonhoven World Cup cyclocross, with its many sand sections and the famous Kuil, already guarantees plenty of excitement, but this year’s edition seems to have an extra dimension. Due to the snowfall over the past few days, the course was still covered in a thick layer of snow on Saturday.
Puck Pieterse experienced this firsthand during her reconnaissance of the sandcross on Saturday. Or should we say: snowcross? The Dutch champion, as usual, took her followers along as she scouted the course. Because of the recent snowfall, we can see that the Zonhoven track was very treacherous on Saturday.
Or as Pieterse herself describes it in her YouTube video: "The sand is even 'thicker' than last year, making it more difficult. You can’t choose your own lines. If it doesn’t melt in the coming hours, it will make for a memorable race."
According to the latest weather forecasts, it will not snow further today (during the afternoon) in Zonhoven, but temperatures will remain below freezing all day. In other words, the cyclocross riders seem ready once again for a snowcross, although the conditions will be less extreme than in Mol.
