Giro 2026: 5 kilometer rule applies in opening stage and five others
The Giro d'Italia will also extend the 3-kilometer rule in certain stages during the upcoming three weeks of racing. In many stages, the GC contenders can breathe a sigh of relief from three kilometers to go, but in several Giro stages, the ‘safe zone’ is extended to five kilometers.
Usually, the rule is simple: when a rider experiences mechanical trouble or delay due to a crash within the last three kilometers of a stage – with a flat(er) finish – they are given the same time as the group they were in at the moment of the incident.
Already in 2024, the UCI announced experiments with extending this rule. The objective was to enhance safety in stage finishes. This was implemented, among others, in the most recent edition of the Tour de France.
In the opening stage, such an exception is already in effect. There, a 5-kilometer rule applies. The same applies to stages 4, 6, 12, 15, and 21.
