Giro 2026: heavy rain pours down in opening of stage five

With its many elevation meters, the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia is already not to be underestimated, but the weather gods are currently making it much tougher. After a dry opening phase, it is now pouring rain in southern Italy.

However, the riders are not deterred by the weather, as attacks are currently coming from the peloton. This quickly caused the first split on the slopes of the third-category climb to Prestieri. Most sprinters – including Dylan Groenewegen and Paul Magnier – have already been dropped.

Yellow alert
This seems to be the harbinger of an extremely tough and rain-soaked stage heading toward the finish in Potenza. From 2 p.m., a yellow alert is in effect in the finish town.

Although the wind is 'only' blowing at force four from the west and the temperature rises to around fifteen degrees Celsius, the rain will come down heavily toward the end of the afternoon. Several weather stations are also warning of thunderstorms.
