Giro 2026: Jonas Vingegaard not focused on matching Tadej Pogacar despite fourth stage win
Jonas Vingegaard is dominating the Giro d'Italia. The Dane from Visma | Lease a Bike claimed his fourth stage win in Carí. It was his first victory in the pink jersey. "My teammates and I were very motivated, we wanted to try to win while wearing the pink jersey," he said in the post-race flash interview.
"That can also fail, so we wanted to seize the first opportunity to do it straight away," said the leader of Visma | Lease a Bike. "If it didn’t work out to win in pink, we could try again."
Vingegaard made the difference on the final climb to Carí (11 km at 8%). "It was a very tough climb. It was long, I think about half an hour. But my teammates did a fantastic job today. They rode at the front from the start and gave the breakaway no chance. On the last climb, they thinned out the peloton. I then had to do the rest. I’m glad I could repay them again."
Pogacar
By now, the Dane has four stage wins to his name in this Giro. Tadej Pogacar won six stages in 2024, alongside the overall classification. Is it in Vingegaard’s mind that he can match his Slovenian rival? "No, I take it day by day. I have four stages now. We’ll see what we do for the rest of the week."
