Could the Giro d'Italia feature Jonas Vingegaard next year? The Dane is seriously considering making his debut in La Corsa Rosa in 2026, but no final decisions have been made yet. This prompted Mauro Vegni to speak out, hoping to entice Vingegaard to participate.
Vegni has since stepped down as race director. The Tour of Lombardy was his last race as an RCS organizer, but he still worked on the route for the 2026 Giro d’Italia, which was presented in Rome last Monday.
Vegni, who has been the Giro d’Italia race director since 2014, spoke after the presentation with Tuttobiciweb about the upcoming Giro d’Italia and its possible participants. The conversation quickly turned to Vingegaard. “If I were him, I wouldn’t miss the chance to take part in the Giro. Especially since he could complete the trilogy of Grand Tours, even before Tadej Pogacar, as he has already won the Tour and Vuelta.”
The Italian also shared his thoughts on the route of ‘his’ Giro. “The race will be marked by a mix of short and demanding stages and longer, challenging days. I hope this avoids any boring stages – the so-called transition stages.”
“In the first week, the GC contenders will already be active, with the climbs of Blockhaus, the Muri Fermo, and then Corno alle Scale. We start the second week with a demanding time trial, which will be crucial in the battle for the overall classification,” Vegni said.
Vingegaard and the Giro
Will Jonas Vingegaard go for the Giro d’Italia-Tour de France double in 2026? The Dane and his team Visma | Lease a Bike have not yet decided. But Vingegaard did say in conversation with La Dernière Heure that he would prefer to win the Giro next year rather than the Tour.
“Winning three Grand Tours or the Tour de France in 2026? I think I’d rather win the three Grand Tours. The Giro is still missing… But we haven’t yet determined if next season’s schedule allows it. We still have to discuss it with the team. Of course, the Tour remains the biggest goal. But now it’s about whether we can combine the two next year.”
