Gravaa, company behind revolutionary tire pressure system, files for bankruptcy
The Dutch startup Gravaa is known in the cycling world for its special tire pressure system. Visma | Lease a Bike utilizes this innovative system, but there is now bad news: Gravaa was recently declared bankrupt by a Dutch court.
According to court documents and statements from the company, the disappointing sales are the main cause, reports Bicycling. From a commercial standpoint, it proved difficult to make the so-called KAPS tire pressure system profitable. Additionally, the cycling industry has faced reduced demand in recent years compared to the peak during the corona period.
Gravaa told cycling website road.cc that scaling up production to become structurally profitable was challenging. The company emphasizes in a statement that several parties have shown interest in a possible takeover. In other words, a restart is not ruled out.
For people currently using a KAPS tire pressure system, there is good news: the system will remain functional for the time being, as well as the associated app and software. However, this marks the temporary end of this technological innovation in cycling.
This is especially a setback for Visma | Lease a Bike. The Dutch team uses the system. For example, the riders competed in the latest edition of Paris-Roubaix with the tire pressure system from the Dutch startup. The formation is "currently reviewing the consequences of all this," writes Het Nieuwsblad.
