Road cyclists are currently enjoying a rest period after a long and grueling season, but this is (not yet) the case for Isaac Del Toro. The season's revelation from UAE Emirates XRG will still be competing this week in his home country. Del Toro has confirmed his participation in the Mexican national championships.
The 21-year-old climber had already planned to take part in the national championships, but his team has since announced that Del Toro will actually compete in both the time trial and the road race. The championship will take place in Ensenada, Baja California, which is Del Toro's hometown. "It's really special, the Mexican championship in my birthplace," he said via UAE Emirates XRG channels.
"For me, it's the perfect way to close the season, surrounded by family, friends, and the fans who have supported me from the beginning. I am proud to race here in the colors of UAE Emirates XRG, finally on my own roads, and I will do everything I can to end the year on a high."
Del Toro expects a great cycling celebration in Ensenada. "These will truly be special days, and I hope the entire Mexican cycling community gets involved and can enjoy the racing this weekend." The time trial is scheduled for Thursday, October 23rd, and two days later the best Mexican riders will compete against each other in the road race.
Sharpening the victory record
The Mexican championships have been organized this year by the new Mexican cycling federation, with support from the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport (CONADE). Despite the last-minute arrangements, the races have been approved by the UCI. Should Del Toro fulfill his favorite's role, UAE Emirates XRG will tighten its own victory record of 95 wins at the last moment.
