Jay Vine speaks out after latest setback and brings good news
You might almost forget, but Jay Vine also participated in the Giro d'Italia. However, the Australian was one of the biggest victims of a massive crash in the second stage and was taken away in an ambulance to the hospital. It is yet another setback for Vine, but he certainly is not giving up.
UAE Emirates XRG has already won four stages in the Giro d'Italia, but the team had a dramatic start to the race. The squad was the biggest victim of the massive crash in the finale of the second stage on Bulgarian soil. Jay Vine and Marc Soler were immediately taken to the hospital after the crash. Several serious injuries were diagnosed there.
Vine suffered a concussion and broke his elbow. For the 30-year-old climber, it is yet another time on the sidelines. The Australian has been involved in several heavy crashes in recent years. For example, two years ago he broke a neck vertebra and two thoracic vertebrae in the horror crash at the Tour of the Basque Country, which required a very long recovery. Also this year, he was out for a long time after a fall at the Tour Down Under.
"I feel good again"
For many riders, it might be the crash too many, but not for Vine. He remains highly determined and now feels much better. "It’s been two weeks now and it’s nice to say things are heading in the right direction again," he shared via Instagram.

"The symptoms of the concussion have partly subsided, the SCAT tests (special protocol for concussions) show good progress, and most importantly, I feel good again. I’m very happy with how things are going now. My elbow has healed much faster than my previous scaphoid fracture, so I have been able to do a few light outdoor training sessions."
"Honestly, this year has been tough mentally. Every time things seem to be improving, another setback occurs. When that often happens completely beyond your control, you get quite used to it. But Team Vine fully supports me and helps me process everything and plan the next steps."
Second child on the way
"For now, the focus is on the home front, with Bre’s due date approaching soon. Baby number two will be an absolute priority in the coming period," he also shared some joyful baby news in passing. "I really appreciate all the messages and good wishes over the past weeks. It has not gone unnoticed."
