Although he is only 29 years old, Jonas Vingegaard is already thinking about his life after cycling. While he is not yet sure how he will shape his life after retiring from professional racing, he seems certain about one thing: "I don't think I'll stay in cycling," he said in an interview with Danish TV Midtvest.
Originally, the two-time Tour winner was trained for a career in the banking sector. "I've always said I wanted to do something with numbers, probably something in banking. I've always been good with numbers," said Vingegaard, who completed a business economics education before his professional cycling career. However, during his cycling career, he discovered he enjoys one thing even more.
"After I became an adult and fixed up my own house, I found out that I liked doing DIY projects more than I thought," said the Dane, who is open to a future career as a carpenter. "That could very well happen. Time will tell. I'm very fascinated by woodworking."
"Spending more time with family"
At any rate, the chances are slim that we’ll see Vingegaard behind the wheel of a team car. "I actually don’t think I’ll stay in cycling when I stop. I think I’ll simply enjoy being home with my family and being there for them. Beyond that, I don’t really know what I want yet, but I’ll figure that out."
Vingegaard has often expressed that he finds it difficult to be away from home for extended periods. His wife Trine caused a stir during an interview at this year’s Tour de France by stating that his team Visma | Lease a Bike should send him on fewer altitude training camps so that Vingegaard could spend more time with his family.
