Jonas Vingegaard felt that the interview with his wife Trine Marie Hansen was "not published at the best moment." In an interview with Ekstra Bladet, the leader of Visma | Lease a Bike looks back on that interview regarding the Tour de France, in which his partner spoke out about the support Vingegaard did or did not receive from the Dutch team.
Trine's conversation with Politiken stirred up a lot of controversy. The wife of the two-time Tour winner noted in an interview that Vingegaard would be away from home too much during the season and seemed to question whether her husband is truly the absolute leader in the Tour. Vingegaard and the management of Visma | Lease a Bike felt compelled to respond, and Wout van Aert also addressed those statements in the media.
"I know that Trine supports me 100% and she will do everything to help me perform at 100 percent. She only wants the best for me," Vingegaard said shortly after the interview appeared. "Of course there are many training camps and altitude training sessions throughout the year, so it is tough for family life. But I’m still riding and I haven’t had a burnout yet. [...] The media have put a spin on it, but that’s apparently what they do. You’re wasting your time on something that doesn’t matter."
It has now been almost half a year, and the Tour de France is long behind us. According to Ekstra Bladet, Vingegaard has no regrets that his wife Trine's interview was made public. "It was not the most suitable moment, but I am good at setting things aside and not overthinking them," Vingegaard says now.
"As long as I know it doesn't affect our team, I can brush it off and have absolutely no problem with it," said the runner-up of the recent Tour de France. Vingegaard himself did not manage to secure a stage victory during the race, while teammate Wout van Aert was given free rein on the final day and won the stage into Paris.
