Jonas Vingegaard will not travel to Rwanda for the World Championships (September 21-28). Instead, the Dane will prepare for the European Championships in Ardèche on October 5. He announced this during a press conference ahead of the Vuelta a España, which starts Saturday in Turin.
Jonas Vingegaard has never started the World Championships as a professional, but the upcoming World Championship course seemed tailor-made for the Dane. Denmark’s new national coach, Michael Mørkøv, hoped he could count on the two-time Tour winner. “As a national coach, it’s obviously very appealing if I can rely on a rider like Jonas. He might be the only one who can challenge the current world champion,” Mørkøv said in an interview with B.T., referring to Tadej Pogacar.
But Vingegaard will not be heading to Rwanda. The 28-year-old climber feels that after the Vuelta (which ends September 14), there is too little time to prepare properly for the World Championships. Instead, he will contest the road race at the European Championships in France on October 5. He will skip the time trial (October 1).
