Lorena Wiebes saw 'a lot of chaos' in Ravenna, luckily she could trust her teammates
Lorena Wiebes fully lived up to her favorite status on Saturday in the Giro Women. Despite the chaos on the city circuit in Ravenna, the Dutch champion still started her sprint from pole position and struck ruthlessly. "This is amazing," she said in the post-race flash interview. "The team worked really hard for this."
"There was a lot of chaos on the local circuit, but we expected that. Luckily, I could trust my teammates, and even though my last lead-out Barbara came to the front too early, I still found a way to sprint today. That is the most important thing."
"We did most of the work before entering the circuit today," Wiebes continued. "Then the GC teams took over because they wanted to keep their leaders at the front, so we focused on the final lap."
On Sunday, a new opportunity awaits the Dutch champion as the riders head to Caorle. "I hope we will sprint again," she concluded. "It would be really amazing to win in the pink jersey."
