Until today, surprisingly, she had not yet made the winners' list of the Duinencross of Koksijde, but on Sunday Lucinda Brand was able to celebrate her first victory in the iconic sandcross. The strongest cyclocross rider of the moment proved superior on the West Flanders sands and notched her twelfth win of the season.
Afterwards, Brand was naturally overjoyed in the flash interview. "I am really very happy with this victory," she begins in conversation with Sporza. "At the start of the season, I set myself several goals, including this race. So to achieve it now is of course very nice."
And yet, the Baloise Glows Lions team leader was not brimming with confidence leading up to the race. "During the first lap of my reconnaissance on Friday, I honestly thought: why did I want to do this again?" she says with a broad smile.
"I am very glad I had already explored the course before, because that way it's already kind of in your system. This morning I felt a lot better on the course, but of course the legs still had to deliver."
Unique Course
Brand is happy with her triumph in Koksijde for several reasons. "I think it’s a very beautiful race because the environment itself determines the difficulty level. The dunes here are unique and tough. And it's also not something that suits me perfectly, which makes it an even greater challenge. I’ve been close to victory here a few times before, but it hadn’t happened yet. Until today."
