Mathieu van der Poel will skip the Road World Championships in Rwanda at the end of September, but he will likely compete in two other world championships this fall. Normally, he will start in mid-September at the Mountain Bike World Championships in Switzerland and at the Gravel World Championships in the Netherlands in early October. The leader of Alpecin-Deceuninck shared this information with various media outlets.
On Wednesday, MVDP resumes racing at the Renewi Tour, where he hopes to confirm that pneumonia no longer affects him during competition. In Algemeen Dagblad, he stated that he was quite shocked by the pain involved and that he still occasionally feels it. “But I’m mainly starting to have some competition before moving on to mountain biking,” he said.
After his MTB adventure, he will likely switch to the gravel bike for the Bolero UCI Gravel World Championships 2025 in South Limburg - of which WielerFlits is an official media partner. Afterwards, MVDP will dive into the cyclo-cross season.
"Hopefully, I don’t fall again."
But first up is the Mountain Bike World Championships in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, preceded by the World Cup in Les Gets. That last race at the end of August serves as the final test before the World Championships two weeks later. For that reason, we remain a bit cautious.
Furthermore, MVDP’s recent mountain biking excursions have not gone very well. At the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games, the 2023 Mountain Bike World Championships in Glasgow, and during the World Cup in May this year, he was forced to abandon the races quickly due to crashes. The Dutch world-class rider reacted wittily on his Instagram account, as shown in the post below.
