Nino Schurter is in his final weeks as a professional MTB rider. It has been known for some time that the 39-year-old Swiss would retire after this season; now, he has also announced his farewell race. At the Lenzerheide World Cup (September 21), a home race for Schurter, he will compete for the last time.
Prior to the Lenzerheide World Cup, Schurter will also race the World Championships. This year it takes place in Valais, also in Switzerland. Schurter will face riders such as Mathieu van der Poel. Initially, the Swiss MTB legend planned to travel to North America in October to participate in the World Cups at Lake Placid and Mont-Sainte-Anne. He has now decided against that.
Whatever happens in the coming weeks, Schurter’s palmarès remains impressive. In his five Olympic appearances, he won bronze (in Beijing), silver (in London), and gold (in Rio). Furthermore, he holds the record for the most world titles. In fact, he extended that record in 2022 with a tenth and so far final rainbow jersey. Schurter also became European champion five times, won 36 World Cup races, and claimed the overall World Cup title nine times.
