Callum Thornley took the win in the U23 version of the Giro di Lombardia. The 22-year-old Brit from the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe Rookies, who will join the WorldTeam next year, was the fastest in a four-man sprint after 170 kilometers. A Belgian, Louic Boussemaere, also finished in the top five.
While Jarno Widar was crowned European U23 champion in the Ardèche, a peloton of his peers contested the Giro di Lombardia U23. The Madonna del Ghisallo (8.6 km at 5.5%) kicked off the finale, followed by the lesser-known Muro dell'Alpino (1.1 km at 9.6%) and Marconagi di Ello (1 km at 9.1%) as the ultimate decisive climbs. After the last ascent, there were seven kilometers remaining to the finish in Oggiono.
On the tough course, an elite group of four riders eventually emerged: Callum Thornley, Antoine L'Hote (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Development), Elliot Rowe (Visma | Lease a Bike Development), and Mattia Negrente (XDS Astana Development). In the final kilometers, this quartet attempted several attacks, but in the end, a sprint decided the outcome.
Negrente launched his sprint from far out but was overtaken by his three breakaway companions. Among them, Thornley proved the fastest. L'Hote had to settle for second place, and Rowe came in third. Behind these four leaders, a Belgian crossed the line in fifth place. This was Louic Boussemaere from Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Development.
