SD Worx-Protime intends to challenge Wiebes' disqualification

The disqualification of Lorena Wiebes after the first stage of the Giro d’Italia Women will likely have a (legal) follow-up. SD Worx-Protime, Wiebes' team, intends to challenge the UCI's decision. "We cannot just let this go," team manager Erwin Janssen told the NOS.

For those who missed it: Lorena Wiebes was removed from the race just hours after her double victory in the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia Women. The sprinter from SD Worx-Protime was disqualified because her bike did not comply with UCI regulations. After the stage, the Dutch rider’s bike was weighed and found to be too light.

SD Worx-Protime has taken the disqualification of Wiebes after the first stage of the Giro d’Italia Women with disbelief. The team also has doubts about the way the bike of the disqualified Wiebes was weighed.

"It is ridiculous"
The team is therefore planning to appeal the UCI’s decision. "It will probably be difficult, but we cannot just let this go. It is ridiculous that Lorena is taken out. This causes us so much damage," explains team manager Janssen. "We were aiming for three or four wins. It’s a shame. These are the bikes we always ride. And we have never had an issue like this before."

According to the successful team, the weighing of the bike reportedly led to different results, raising questions. "How is that possible? The first measurement was 70 grams below the limit. If the scales have been at altitude, they need to be recalibrated. That has not happened, as we heard. We ourselves measured above 6.83 kilos after the finish. But that was indoors, without wind, using our own equipment."

Holding liable for incurred damages
The UCI, however, remains firm, but Janssen will not give up. "We will do everything, including legally. But they are relentless. It will be their no versus our yes. They will receive a letter. We will hold them liable for the damages we have suffered."
