Stefan Küng undergoes successful operation but faces long recovery

Stefan Küng successfully underwent surgery on Monday evening in Switzerland for his fracture in his left thigh, according to his team Tudor Pro Cycling. The 32-year-old rider – who suffered a serious crash during Omloop Het Nieuwsblad – now faces a long rehabilitation.

The Swiss addition to Tudor was taken directly to the hospital after his crash in Omloop, where he had to stay overnight and was informed that surgery on his left leg was necessary due to the fracture’s location and complexity.

The fracture in his left femur was anatomically reduced on Monday (a medical procedure where a doctor realigns a broken bone to its original position) and firmly stabilized. Küng will need to offload his left leg and use crutches for the coming weeks.

If his recovery goes according to plan, the rider could possibly start gentle indoor training on the rollers within three to four weeks. He is expected to be back to full training in about three months.

“The top priority for Stefan and the team is a full recovery. Therefore, it is still too early to say anything about a possible return to the peloton,” concludes the Swiss team.
