Nicolas Sarkozy is currently making headlines. The former French president was convicted this week for participation in a criminal organization and was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Sarkozy is receiving support from an unexpected source: the UCI.
"I think warmly of my friend Sarkozy on this special day," writes UCI president David Lappartient on X. "He is an immense servant of France, the country he deeply loves. I can attest to his energy, enthusiasm, and courage. He loves the people. See you very soon on the bike. We share a sincere friendship."
Lappartient’s show of support is notable because the UCI has strongly advocated in recent months to keep sport and politics separate. The international cycling union made this call during the controversial World Championships in Rwanda and amid pro-Palestinian protests at the Vuelta a España.
Sarkozy was also suspected of corruption, embezzlement of public funds, and illegal financing of an election campaign, but he was acquitted on those charges. The 70-year-old Frenchman can still appeal, but for now, he remains in custody.
