Tadej Pogačar has lost a criterium once before. The reigning road racing world champion finished second on Sunday in the BeKING Criterium in his hometown of Monaco, behind Jonathan Milan. For the first time, there was also a women's race, won by Lorena Wiebes.
Sunday in Monaco was all about the BeKING Criterium, a local charity race attracting many riders living in Monaco. Among the attendees was Prince Albert, who showed his support for the event. The criterium ended in a sprint finish, with Jonathan Milan crossing the line ahead of Tadej Pogačar and Monaco’s pride, Victor Langelotti.
On the women's side, Dutch national champion Lorena Wiebes was the star at the start. She was recently hit by a car last week while cycling in Limburg but was able to ride again after a few days of recovery — and she went on to win. Kasia Niewiadoma and Anna Trevisi joined her on the podium in Monaco.
Initiated by Matteo Trentin, for a good cause
The first edition of the BeKING Criterium took place in 2021. Initiator Matteo Trentin managed to attract several big names right from the start. The inaugural event was a success and the criterium has since become an annual event.
Trentin aims with BeKING to strengthen the bond between professional cyclists and the local population of Monaco. The organizer especially focuses on youth. For example, Trentin also runs a Kids Ride. Furthermore, in the hours before the criterium, he organizes some charity races. He hopes to raise as much money as possible for La Fondation Princesse Charlène de Monaco and La Fondazione Michele Scarponi. The theme of safety is also addressed.
