The future of Ruben Guerreiro is currently shrouded in uncertainty. It is now clear that the Portuguese rider is no longer under contract with Movistar. According to the Spanish sports newspaper AS, the former King of the Mountains in the Giro d'Italia failed to file his whereabouts, but Guerreiro presents a very different story in an interview with TopCycling.
According to AS, there was an 'insurmountable gap' between Guerreiro and his former employer Movistar. The Portuguese climber allegedly neglected to submit his whereabouts in the WADA's ADAMS system (Anti-Doping Administration System) last season. This is mandatory for cyclists so they can be subjected to doping controls at any time.
In an interview with TopCycling, Guerreiro dismisses this as pure fiction. "When I read that, I glanced at the calendar to see if it was April 1st. I have committed no violations. In fact, I've never even received a notification that I missed a doping test. This news is completely unfounded. Throughout my eleven-year professional career, I have always been transparent, loyal, and honest."
Physical issues
The former stage winner in the Giro d'Italia hopes to continue his career, although his body has been letting him down for some time. "At the moment, I’m dealing with a herniated disc in my neck, which I have suffered from since 2024 and which has never fully healed. That’s why I haven’t signed a contract with a team yet, because I’m not ready to race currently. But I’m working on my recovery."
Guerreiro describes his current situation as 'paused'. "The last time I completed a full training ride was in November, as I’m now focusing on physiotherapy and strength training. I have therefore halted negotiations with new teams. I prefer to take it step by step."
"Last June, I spoke with another WorldTour team. It didn’t come to fruition in the end, but maybe that was for the best. Later, I realized I need time to get my physical condition in order."
