Thibau Nys opened his cyclocross season in the best possible way. At the notorious Koppenbergcross, he immediately left the rest of the competitors behind.
"It's a great way to kick off my season. This was one of my goals for the cyclocross season. To start off with a win is incredible," he said in the post-race interview.
But that doesn't mean Nys had it easy. "You have to fight yourself for a whole hour. I had control early on, which was very pleasant. But it's still an hour riding at the limit. If you let your focus slip even a little to save some energy or recover, mistakes come naturally. That’s not an option, so it's an hour at the limit."
Nys did spot one area for improvement. "Technically, it wasn't 100 percent yet, but physically I was able to make the difference. On the Koppenberg, I tried to ride up as fast as possible every lap."
And that’s exactly what Nys had predicted beforehand: dominance. "That was meant playfully," he now winks. "So I'm glad I could win today, because next week it could be different again."
