"This is really crap": Thibau Nys frustrated after Hoogerheide World Cup
The victory remained well out of reach for Thibau Nys, but the Belgian champion seemed on course for a podium spot in the final lap of the Hoogerheide World Cup. However, in a tense sprint, Nys was overtaken by Tibor Del Grosso and Niels Vandeputte and was clearly disappointed afterwards.
"I am disappointed... I have not much more to say," Nys was brief in an interview with Telenet Play Sports. "There wasn’t really a plan. The course was so fast that you had to gamble on the last lap."
In that final lap, Nys decided to throw a wrench in the works. "I felt like I was the strongest rider in the chasing group, but it’s a shame I couldn’t crown it with a podium spot."
The Belgian failed to shake off Del Grosso and Vandeputte, so it came down to a sprint on the uphill Scheldeweg. "I was indeed surprised by Niels, but it’s my own fault," a self-critical Nys admitted.
"You just have to sprint all the way to the line. I thought I had third place secured, but Niels came with more speed from behind. This is really annoying," he concluded without mincing words.
