Within the UAE Emirates XRG team, the focus mainly revolves around world champion and Tour winner Tadej Pogacar, but looking ahead, it’s also wise to keep an eye on the development of António Morgado. The Portuguese top talent will be seen again next year in some Flemish classics, although not all cycling fans will notice.
The 21-year-old Morgado was initially not exactly a fan of the Flemish spring races, but that has since changed. “These are races where endurance is very important. And you just have to keep fighting all the time. That’s what I like.”
And then there are the super enthusiastic Flemish cycling fans. “I love them. When they cheer me on the climbs, they often call me Molano,” Morgado laughs in an interview with Sporza. “I know we look alike, but we are not the same.”
Seeking redemption
The Portuguese rider will contest several classics again next season, including Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Dwars door Vlaanderen, and the Tour of Flanders.
“In the major classics, I will have to support the team leaders, but in the smaller classics, I will get a freer role. I will also ride the Giro d’Italia. It is my ambition to be in good shape there and support the team leader (João Almeida, ed.). I will also show that I have become a better climber.”

Morgado feels he has something to prove in 2026, as he experienced a disappointing season, partly due to health issues. “2025 was a bad year. It was not at all what I expected. In 2026, I want to improve as a rider. I know I can do much better than what I showed last year. Whether I win one, two, or four races doesn’t matter that much to me.”
