The photographer who caused the collision with Jonas Vingegaard is banned from the Tour de France for two days. The photographer from the press agency EPA crossed the road without looking yesterday, right at the moment when the Visma | Lease a Bike leader was passing the summit of Mont Ventoux.
Vingegaard immediately complained about a painful shoulder after the incident. His team confirms he did not sustain any lasting damage from the collision.
There is no video footage or photos of the incident because it occurred in a zone just beyond the finish line where no one was allowed, except for two photographers—one of whom caused the collision. Due to the limited space at the summit of Mont Ventoux, all support staff and media were kept at a distance. The location of the crash was just before a corner, out of reach of all cameras.
Plugge: "This could have ended his Tour"
The photographer in question apologized this morning at the bus of the Dutch WorldTeam. Team manager Richard Plugge calls it unacceptable that a professional crosses the road without looking. "Fortunately, Jonas (Vingegaard, ed.) came out unscathed. This could have ended his Tour."
As for whether the two-day penalty is sufficient, the team manager refers to the UCI. "It’s up to the jury to determine the disciplinary measure. But for me, he could have also been banned for the rest of the Tour. This should never have happened."
