UCI Suspends Oier Lazkano Over Abnormal Biological Passport
The UCI has provisionally suspended Oier Lazkano due to irregularities in his biological passport in 2022, 2023, and 2024. These irregularities violate the international cycling federation's anti-doping regulations. The UCI does not wish to make further statements while the procedure is ongoing.
The irregularities in the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) of the Spaniard — who has been riding for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe since this season — have been deemed unexplained. An ABP is an individual electronic file for each rider, compiling the results of all doping tests collected as part of the ABP program over a certain period.
These irregularities concern the years 2022, 2023, and 2024. During that period, the 25-year-old Spaniard rode for Movistar. Lazkano showed notable performances in multiple spring classics in early 2024. This earned him a transfer last winter to Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, where, alongside other new signings like Laurence Pithie and the van Dijke brothers, he was expected to help shape the team's classics nucleus.
Extended Absence
Lazkano has been absent for a while both from the racing peloton and social media. His last race was on April 13, when he finished 117th in Paris-Roubaix. The suspension could explain the prolonged silence.
