Vingegaard cheers for childhood friend Valgren: "Asked about the situation several times"

Jonas Vingegaard also had a great day in the Giro d'Italia. In Andalo, he heard that his childhood friend Michael Valgren had won the stage. "That made me very happy," Vingegaard said after the finish to Cycling Pro Net. "Along the way, I really asked several times about the race situation upfront.

Vingegaard and Valgren share a long history together. Both riders come from the same region in Denmark, and their parents get along so well that they went on vacation together during their youth.

"We were at cycling races together every weekend, and my parents and his parents get along very well, so we went to France together so I had someone to train with," Valgren said a few years ago to the Danish DR Sporten. "He was five years younger, but even then I could barely keep up with him uphill."

Quiet day
Besides that, Vingegaard experienced a quiet day in the Giro d'Italia. Beforehand, the maglia rosa holder had already decided to let the breakaway go, and his team did not have to do much to control the break's lead. "There was actually little communication behind that," he explains. "We gave the breakaway six minutes, and then other teams started working because they didn’t want Caruso back in the general classification."

"It would be great if I could win two more stages in the coming week, but I actually don’t expect it. I went deep yesterday and I still have a race in July, so sometimes you have to think about what’s still to come. I also don’t want to completely kill myself, if that’s possible," he concludes.
