What a team player! Lorena Wiebes hands out water bottles to teammates after DNF

Lorena Wiebes had hoped to contend for the win in the Amstel Gold Race on Sunday, but she didn’t have her best day and had to drop out quite early. However, after abandoning the race, she still played an important role for her team SD Worx-Protime in another way.

Wiebes proved to be the ideal teammate by doing her job as a lead rider in the feed zone. The Dutch champion then watched as Anna van der Breggen, Mischa Bredewold, and Nienke Vinke shaped the finale. Unfortunately, SD Worx-Protime did not secure a victory or a close podium spot: Van der Breggen finished ninth, Bredewold fourteenth.

Before the start, Wiebes was very motivated and ambitious. "I’ve gotten stronger. You do need to have a good day. If your legs aren’t fully there, it becomes a very tough race," she said to our camera. "But I’m confident."

"We are keeping an open mind. Last year, we also didn’t expect the breakaway to go so early in the finale. It’s always hard to predict how it will unfold."
