Wout van Aert has undergone successful surgery on his right ankle. On Friday afternoon, during the Zilvermeercross in Mol, he sustained a small fracture and a sprain in the joint, after which it was decided to operate. His team Visma | Lease a Bike announced on Saturday afternoon that the operation went well and that Van Aert can now begin his recovery.
The Belgian was scheduled to race the World Cup in Zonhoven this Sunday and the Belgian Championship a week later, before completing the January training camp in Spain with Visma | Lease a Bike. During that period, a decision was also expected regarding a possible World Championships participation in Hulst, but that is now off the table. In February, a high-altitude training camp on Tenerife is still planned for Van Aert, although it is unclear whether he will be able to stick to that schedule.
The surgery was successful. Wout will now begin his recovery.
