Stage 1 Vizille - Saint-Ismier (140.1km)
On Sunday, June 7, the riders will gather in Vizille for the start of the 78th edition of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. While stage races usually begin with a prologue or a sprint-friendly stage, the race immediately heads into the mountains on French soil.
No fewer than five categorized climbs are on the menu on the way to the finish in Saint-Ismier, with the toughest ascent of them all — the Côte de Rousset (8.2 km at 7.6%) — coming just twenty kilometers from the finish.
Before that, the riders will already have tackled four climbs that should not be underestimated: the Col de l’Arzelier (8.6 km at 5.7%), Côte de Seyssins (2.6 km at 6%), Côte de Quaix-en-Chartreuse (2.3 km at 9.2%), and the Col de Vence (5.1 km at 6%). By the time they reach the foot of the final climb, the riders will already be seriously fatigued.
