As expected, UAE Emirates XRG won the Giro del Veneto. On the final climb of the day, Isaac del Toro needed just one attack to break away from the competition and secure UAE Emirates XRG’s 95th victory of the season. Pavel Sivakov finished in second place.
The Italian season concludes this week with two races in the Veneto region. Wednesday’s highlight was the Giro del Veneto, featuring five ascents of the Torricella Massimiliana (4 kilometers at 5%) in the finale. The top favorite was Del Toro, but he faced competition from riders like Romain Grégoire, Marc Hirschi, and Christian Scaroni.
In the early break, we saw Italian cycling legend Elia Viviani, who decided to showcase his form one last time in his final professional race. The Italian was joined by Michele Bichelli, Mikel Retegi, Davide Bais, Storm Ingebrigtsen, Kevin Rosola, and Filippo D'Aiuto, but he had to drop back with 71 kilometers to go. The rest of the break held out a bit longer but had no real chance for the win and were caught with 34 kilometers remaining.
Del Toro quickly dispatches the competition
All eyes then turned to the UAE Emirates XRG riders. On the penultimate climb, Pavel Sivakov briefly tried to attack, but ultimately it was Del Toro who ‘just did it’ on the final ascent. After a lead-out from Sivakov, only Grégoire briefly had enough power to stay with the Mexican. In the end, the Frenchman had to concede and reached the summit twenty seconds behind.
In the last nine kilometers, Del Toro consolidated and even extended his lead. The Mexican crossed the finish line with more than a half-minute advantage, securing his sixteenth pro victory of the year. Pavel Sivakov rounded off the victory for the team by finishing second.
