A new day, a new sprint victory for Paul Magnier in the Gree-Tour of Guangxi. The 21-year-old French sprint sensation was once again too fast for the competition in the second stage. With this latest win on Chinese soil, his win tally for 2025 now stands at sixteen.
The first stage ended in an inevitable bunch sprint, but on day two this was far from certain. The nearly 180-kilometer stage from Chongzuo to Jingxi was a bit hillier. Less than forty kilometers from the finish, the climb of National Road (7.7 km at 4.2%) presented a challenging obstacle, although there was still time afterward to regroup for a possible bunch sprint.

Breakaway with Van den Broek, Mollema abandons
The day's breakaway formed quite early and included six riders, among them one Dutchman. Frank van den Broek decided to take an attacking approach, hoping to surprise the peloton alongside Simon Guglielmi (Arkéa-B&B Hotels), Michael Valgren (EF Education-EasyPost), Kevin Geniets (Groupama-FDJ), Stan Dewulf (Decathlon AG2R), and Peter Øxenberg (INEOS Grenadiers).

However, the six attackers were given little room, so a surprise win didn’t seem likely. Still, Van den Broek and company managed to start the day’s only climb with a lead. On the slopes of this climb, the break split up (Van den Broek, Øxenberg, and Dewulf remained) and we saw the first serious selection in the peloton. Several sprinters were dropped, and Bauke Mollema’s abandonment was also noted.
The three remaining leaders kept up a strong pace and survived the climb, though their advantage had shrunk to just half a minute. In the somewhat thinned-out peloton, Soudal Quick-Step and UAE Emirates XRG took the dirty work upon themselves, and under their leadership the remaining members of the early breakaway were reeled in.
Unstoppable
A bunch sprint was therefore inevitable, although Jhonatan Narváez still tried to catch everyone off guard. With a late attack, the Ecuadorian from UAE Emirates XRG made a brave attempt to surprise the sprinters, but it was to no avail. In the ensuing sprint, Paul Magnier once again proved unbeatable, celebrating his sixteenth victory of the season.
Magnier stayed several bike lengths ahead of Pavel Bittner (Picnic PostNL) and Stanisław Aniołkowski (Cofidis), further solidifying his lead in the general classification.
