'Angry Javier Romo grabs Matteo Jorgenson by the neck after Tirreno stage'
It wasn’t visible in the live broadcast, but according to Het Laatste Nieuws, there was a heated confrontation between Matteo Jorgenson and Javier Romo after the queen stage of Tirreno-Adriatico. The latter was unhappy with a race move by the American and made his feelings clear.
After the tough hilly stage to Camerino — in which he finished third — Jorgenson rode to the team bus of his employer Visma | Lease a Bike. There, he was confronted by an angry Javier Romo.
The Spanish rider from Movistar — Jorgenson’s former team — then grabbed his American colleague by the scruff of the neck. Romo was clearly upset over an (unknown) maneuver by the American during the stage. And it didn’t stop there, as the puncheur confronted him with ‘threatening language,’ according to HLN.
Team director has to intervene
His team director Max Sciandri even had to step in between the two riders to prevent Romo from escalating from verbal to physical aggression. As Jorgenson boarded the bus, he couldn’t resist cynically shouting adios (Spanish for goodbye or see you, editor’s note) at the Movistar rider.
